Why Choose British Council Women in STEM Scholarships Program?

British Council Women in STEM Scholarships is dedicated to creating greater opportunities for girls and women in the fields of STEM. Unfortunately, the UN Scientific Education and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) reported that in 2019, less than 30 percent of researchers worldwide were women. Furthermore, only 30 percent of female students chose STEM-related fields for higher education. However, we are witnessing a gradual increase, with the current figure standing at 35 percent (Anon, 2022).

When examining specific subjects from 2017 to 2018, we found that the number of females studying STEM subjects was particularly low in Computer Sciences, Engineering and Technology, with only 19 percent of students being female compared to 81 percent male. However, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, and Statistics had slightly higher representation at 39 percent and 37 percent, respectively, with their male counterparts at 61 percent and 63 percent, respectively.
