DOST-SEI Announces Qualifiers. The Department of Science and Technology–Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) has officially released the highly anticipated results of the competitive science and technology scholarship examination for this year. This announcement marks the introduction of a new group of senior high school students who will embark on an exciting academic journey as S&T scholars when they enroll in college.

9,776 Incoming College Freshmen Qualify as S&T Scholars

Out of the 79,585 examinees who participated in the national qualifying exam on March 18 to 19, 2023, a total of 9,776 students have qualified for the 2023 DOST-SEI Undergraduate S&T Scholarship Program. These successful applicants will begin enjoying the benefits of their scholarships at the start of the first semester in the academic year 2023-2024.

DOST-SEI Announces Qualifiers: Unveiling the 2023 DOST-SEI Undergraduate Scholarship Qualifiers

This year’s pen-and-paper qualifying examination took place in 241 testing centers nationwide, marking the resumption of face-to-face exams after a three-year pause caused by the pandemic. During this period, the Institute utilized data analytics to identify the qualifiers.

Out of the total number of passers, 5,561 students qualified as scholars under the RA 7687 Scholarship Program, which offers scholarships to academically talented individuals from economically disadvantaged families. Additionally, 4,215 students qualified under the DOST-SEI Merit Scholarship Program. Furthermore, there are 1,224 potential qualifiers who are currently under consideration. Their names do not appear in the published list due to pending revalidation of certain requirements.

The qualifiers will receive their Notice of Award, while the potential qualifiers will be advised on the specific requirements they need to resubmit. Subsequently, all the qualifiers, accompanied by their parents or legal guardians, are invited to attend an orientation on S&T Scholarship Policies and Procedures.

“The announcement of the scholarship exam results marks the beginning of a transformative chapter in the lives of the qualifiers. We believe that they now have the freedom to pursue their dreams and aspirations of S&T careers without constraints,” said Dr. Josette T. Biyo, DOST-SEI Director.

Opportunities Ahead

DOST-SEI Announces Qualifiers. Qualifiers who choose to avail themselves of the scholarship will be entitled to various benefits throughout their S&T degree program. These benefits include a monthly stipend of ₱7,000, tuition fee subsidies of up to ₱40,000 per academic year for students enrolled in private universities and colleges, allowances for learning materials and/or connectivity, one-time MS/PE clothing allowance, one economy-class roundtrip fare per year for students studying outside their home province, outright thesis allowance, graduation allowance, and group accident insurance.

To qualify for the scholarship, students must pursue a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree program in any of the priority fields of study. These priority S&T programs are available at state universities or colleges, private higher education institutions recognized by the Commission on Higher Education as Centers of Excellence or Centers of Development, or those with FAAP Level III accreditation for the specific BS program they intend to enroll in. Our program’s support will enable them to explore their scientific interests, pursue higher education, and set them on a path to becoming the next generation of scientists, technologists, innovators, and problem solvers,” added Dr. Biyo.

Future Obligations of Scholars

Upon completion of their degree programs, scholars under the RA 7687 and Merit programs are obligated to work in their specialized fields within the country, whether in the public or private sector, for a period equivalent to the number of years they enjoyed the scholarship.

The DOST-SEI, as the service agency of the DOST, is mandated to accelerate the development of S&T human resources in the country. This is achieved through the administration of undergraduate and graduate scholarships, advanced specialized training, the promotion of S&T culture, and the development of innovative science education programs.
